Dexter

We made reservations for 7.30 PM and left home around 7 ish since it’s pretty close. The moment we got there, I could see it was one of those quirky restaurants. Minimalist exterior but very colourful (specifically pink) on the inside.

The giant glowing X on top the entrance definitely gave it away, making Dexter an easy to spot hidden gem.

Looking at their profile on Broadsheet, they do American Barbeque and a couple of their popular dishes are the pig’s head buns and hot meat doughnuts.

Anyway, I didn’t do much research before heading here and just looked at their Zomato to see what were the people’s favorites were. I discussed with G and L what we should get prior to going here just because we were excited.

We didn’t know they served hot meat doughnuts until we got there and saw a giant graphic of their signature dish.

The Vibe

The music was loud and it was a pretty busy place. I usually hate crowds but this didn’t upset me. The pink lights and dimly lit room made it more intimate.

The menu was interesting. Their dishes incorporated oriental and western aspects (think Sriracha, kim chi, jalapeno). I eyed their beef tartare from Zomato so we ordered that.

We ended up ordering a variety of dishes such as the Korean beef tartare, hot meat doughnuts, beef briskets, and cured pork jowl.

The Taste

The food was amazing. My favorite had to be their hot meat doughnuts. I didn’t know complex it was to make them since it seemed like such a simple dish.

Apparently the meat inside the doughnuts take a lot of effort to cook since they can’t be watery and putting the hot meat inside the dough itself has to be done with precision and speed to avoid it exploding.

Anyway, the doughnuts had a peculiar taste. Sweet on the outside and savoury on the inside. The dough was soft and springy rolled in sugar and paprika (I thought it was cinnamon sugar at first) and the meat reminded me of a chilli dog. It was so yum.

I also really liked the briskets It had pickled apples (very cinnamony), and the best mashed potatoes ever.
Briskets!

The People

What set Dexter apart from all the restaurants I’ve eaten in is the one incident I had when I dropped my fork. It was a loud place and it was super crowded. One of the staff who was in another room brought me a clean fork after 15 seconds of it happening.

He must’ve had superb hearing or their customer service was amazing. I was just in awe of the service and staff at Dexter and most importantly their delicious food.

Final Thoughts

I would go back again but I’d go back for lunch since I want to take better pictures of the food and place LOL.

No joke though, their hot meat doughnuts is a must and I would go back just to enjoy the vibes and people there.
